NM awarded highway safety funds

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The New Mexico Department of Transportation has been awarded more than $1.4 million in federal grants for highway safety programs.

The U.S. Department of Transportation funds come in two separate grants.

One, for about $1.15 million, can be used for education, enforcement and research programs designed to reduce traffic crashes, deaths, injuries and property damage.

The remaining $249,000 grant is to help adopt and implement seat belt and child safety seat laws.

The money was announced by Democratic U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman, who says it will help promote traffic safety.
