AMARILLO, TEXAS - Sleepless nights, a strict sometimes bland diet....and a cancer risk.  Acid reflux derails the routine of millions of people.

A new procedure that has just come to Amarillo burns off the potentially cancerous esophageal lining in people with the disease.

37 year old Chris Stevenson knows all too well the frustration and pain of acid reflux. He has had it for a long time.

He says, "my whole life. Ever since I was a little kid...I couldn't eat after five or 6 in the evening without having problems."

He finally hit his boiling point when he could no longer sleep at night.  The lack of sleep is not the only dangerous side effect of the disease.

Dr. Amit Trehan at the Amarillo Endoscopy Center says, "long term patients who have this can develop pre cancerous lining in the esophagus."

So to rid Chris, and other patients, completely of the cancer risk, Tr. Trehan uses a catheter that goes down the esophagus and burns away the pre cancerous lining.

He says, "this way you can prevent the pre cancer from going to cancer. We don't have to worry about esophageal cancers."

The procedure takes about half an hour, and the patient is home the same day with a little soreness.  Chris believes it is worth it.

Dr. Trehan recommends anyone, young or old, who has had acid reflux for five years get their esophagus checked.
