Amarillo, Texas - It's something most pregnant women probably don't think about, but a quick trip to the dentist could save your baby's life.

NewsChannel 10's Kristen Guilfoos has more on the growing concern over pregnancy gum disease.

It's not a likely link...Your teeth and your baby... But it's one that shouldn't be ignored. Like any infection, gum disease can cause bacteria to get into your bloodstream, which is, of course, a direct link to your unborn child.

Research shows pregnant women with gum disease are seven times as likely to have a pre-mature baby, which means that baby could have birth defects, become very sick, or in some cases, not survive at all.

Dentists we spoke with say it's vital for women to get their teeth deep cleaned very early in their pregnancy, and keep a close eye on their teeth and gums throughout the next nine months.

Dr. Bryan Collins says, "you'll get bad breath you just can't seem to get rid of. Your gums may be sore and bleeding and swell a little. But in most cases, only with a screening are you going to be aware you even have gum disease."
