Amarillo, Texas - Hundreds of area residents are keeping a big secret... You've probably talked or interacted with many of them and you'd never know they can't read.

NewsChannel 10's Kristen Guilfoos has more on the growing problem of adult illiteracy in the Texas Panhandle.

The Panhandle has one of the highest adult illiteracy rates in Texas... It's estimated that 20% of adults in Potter County and 7% of adults in Randall County can't read.

When we say they can't read, that could mean anywhere from reading at only a middle school level to literally not being able to read a single sentence.

It's an embarrassing thing to admit... And many who get help from local resources don't even tell their families they're struggling.

Elaine Basham with the Amarillo Area Adult Literacy Council says, "we have people who can't read a medicine bottle to give their children their prescriptions. Who can't move about the city in any way because  they can't pass the drivers test or  they can't read the street signs. People who can't order lunch from their menu."

If you'd like to help teach adults to read, you can contact Elaine Basham at 806-373-9009. You can also call Ruby Depuy at 806-356-7647 for more information on tutor training workshops happening in the near future.
