Amarillo, TX - If you're planning on going downtown or to any other party tonight. Police say they want you to have fun. But they'd rather you be safe. Police lights are usually a bad sign if you've had too much to drink.

"Last year between December 31st and January 1st we arrested 7 people for DWI. In that 48 hour period," says Jerry Neufeld of the Amarillo Police. Which Police say isn't extremely abnormal. But a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation is allowing the APD to have extra officers on patrol tonight.

And with all that extra law enforcement out there. Police say that driving isn't the only thing you need to be worried about. Their also stepping up enforcement on public intoxication when walking from bar to bar.

Neufeld says "seeing how bad someone is swaying back and forth. Are they walking close to traffic? Are they by themselves? Is there someone else that can take care of them? That's something we would look at.

Oscar Gamboa owns Bodegas and La Chateau downtown. He says just a police presence has helped him and his staff keep control on big nights. "With police being here you know everybody's going to be on their best behavior. Or just take it to the right amount of fun. And then right there cut it off."

Gamboa also told me that Ryan Oneill Auto's has offered to pay for anyone's cab fare who can't drive home from Bodegas tonight. So it's not only police who want to make Amarillo a safe place to ring in the New Year.
