Amarillo, Texas - District 87 Representative David Swinford says his reason for not running for re-election is as much politically strategic as it is personal.
At a news conference Tuesday morning at his office in the Chase Building, Swinford says because of the inevitable loss of representation from the Texas Panhandle due to redistricting pressures, he says it would be beneficial to step down in favor of new blood guided by present Panhandle Representatives John Smithee and Warren Chisum.
Despite the expected loss to the south of a House District, Swinford says he is certain Potter and Randall Counties will have separate representation.
Swinford also says he wants to spend more time with his grandchildren.
