AMARILLO, Texas (AP) - A 58-year-old Texas man has pleaded guilty to kidnapping his ex-girlfriend, who twice jumped from his pickup truck in an attempt to escape.

The U.S. Attorney's Office announced Monday that Ronnie Joe Stowers pleaded guilty in federal court in Amarillo. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

According to plea documents, Stowers kidnapped his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint in October. She twice jumped from his moving pickup in an attempt to escape. On the first attempt, a passing motorist stopped to offer aid but had to leave when Stowers leveled a shotgun at the motorist.

After several hours of holding her captive, Stowers eventually gave her the truck keys and allowed her to drive away. New Mexico authorities found him with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.
