Amarillo, Texas - This Christmas there are hundreds of animals right here in the Panhandle who need a home for the holidays.
The Dalhart Animal Wellness Sanctuary - or DAWGS - has many dogs and cats, especially those with special needs.
One volunteer says the no kill shelter has taken in deaf dogs and three legged dogs. Many were just days away from being put down when they were rescued.
Volunteer Gayle Luna says, "we've really pushed this month of December to find homes for these babies so they don't have to spend Christmas at a shelter."
Luna says they have also taken in older dogs....sweet dogs whose families were hit hard by the economy and could no longer take care of their pets.
She continues, "we're committed to taking in homeless pets, regardless of age, special needs or whatever. And we're committed to finding them homes."
As a matter of fact, 18 animals have new homes Saturday.
The organization spent the day at PetCo, and will be there again Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. with animals who need a home.
The adoption fee is $85 and often includes spay or neutering and vaccines.
