Dumas, TX -The Texas Rangers continue their investigation into an officer involved shooting in Dumas that leaves one man dead.

Police say they responded to a domestic assault call at roughly 9:20 last night. Initial reports say John Calhoun Ward was choking his girlfriend before pulling out a gun and threatening to kill her.

That is when Sergeant Wilkins of the Dumas police arrived on scene. The gun was reportedly pointed at him and he proceeded to shoot and kill Ward. We're being told this is the first call they've ever received for domestic disturbance at 228 Peach Street since Dumas began keeping records in 1993.

Police there say they thought it was best to turn the investigation over to the Texas Rangers.  "We basically just turned everything over to DPS on this case just to maintain a good balance and make sure that all of our bases are covered," says Dumas Chief of Police Dale Alwan.

One neighbor told us off camera that she's had numerous issues with Ward over the past year. She says he once pushed her son off his bike and threw it over the fence. She also says he fired a gun at her son's dog one day.

But no felony charges have ever been handed down to Ward in Dumas. The Texas Rangers will complete the investigation before the district attorney presents the case to a Grand Jury. Police are saying the officers actions were justified and Ward's girlfriend credits Sergeant Wilkins with saving her life.
