Amarillo, Texas - Domestic violence is increasing at record rates in Amarillo... Domestic violence hotline calls have gone up by more than 42% increase this year alone. And that's somewhere in the ball park of 1500 Family Support Service hotline calls so far this year.
As for why those calls have increased so dramatically, no one knows for sure, but the Ersela Demerson, the Shelter Manager, says the three main domestic violence triggers are stress, alcohol and debt... All things that tend to compound during the holiday season.
So many women in our area are needing help that now the local shelter is over capacity. Demerson says, "Sometimes we can't accommodate them in our rooms, so we have to bring up cots. We have people sleeping on the couch, on the floor. We don't turn anyone away ever."
The women making these hotline phone calls range in age from around 17 to upwards of 70 years old. If you need help, you can contact Family Support Services by calling their 24-hour crisis hotline. That number is 806-374-5433.
