CHILDRESS, TEXAS - Childress County has a higher poverty rate than 99 percent of the rest of America according to new information from the US Census Bureau --- but many wonder how that can be.

Drive through Childress, and it's hard to find signs of poverty. There are a few odd houses here and there, but overall - no overwhelming evidence that more than one in four people living here are below poverty level.

Some experts say poverty is often an invisible problem. Childress leaders say that might be the case there because the town has a huge population of older, retired people who would fall under the poverty line.
