Ex-State School Worker Indicted in Death of Castro Co. Man

Michael Nicholson, Lubbock State School resident Michael Nicholson, Lubbock State School resident

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) _ A now-former Lubbock State School worker has been indicted over the June death of a 45-year-old resident.

A Lubbock County grand jury on Tuesday indicted 28-year-old Doneil Smith on a manslaughter charge. A coroner ruled the death of Michael Nicholson was due to suffocation during a struggle. The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reports agency documents indicate Smith allegedly restrained Nicholson by sitting on him.

Six state school workers, including Smith, were fired after the incident. Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services spokeswoman Laura Albrecht confirmed the firings were tied to the "physical abuse and neglect'' of a resident. The school is now called the Lubbock State Supported Living Center.
