Copper Thefts on the Rise

Amarillo, TX - Copper thefts are on the rise again in Amarillo. As NewsChannel 10's Ryan Cody found out.. It's costing people much more than the thieves are making.

Pastor Mark Rector arrived to work at "Church Alive" Wednesday morning to find his internet was off.

"So I called Sudden-Link. They came out. He went on the roof. Came down and let me know the cable had been cut."

But that turned out to be the least of Pastor Mark's concerns. Which brings us to the roof of Church Alive where the other night the thieves stripped the air conditioning units down to this. It's pretty much nothing. And they did that to 8 units across the roof.

Corporal Jerry Nuefeld of the Amarillo police hasn't seen much of this lately. "Its not something we've seen as many as like we did 2 or 3 years ago."

But recently the price of copper has reached over two dollars. That's up a full dollar from January.

"We're seeing a little bit in the rise of the price of copper. So we may see a rise in the number of copper thefts.

And as the "Church Alive" struggles to pay for the ten thousand dollars in damages. Thieves are looking for more metal.
