FDA Report Reminds Public of Salmonella Danger

More than one hundred people contracted salmonella poisoning in 2007-2008, and pet turtles are the cause.

Because turtles carry the bacteria, the disease can be easily transmitted to anyone who handles them.

Children under the age of five and pregnant women have a much greater risk of contracting salmonella.

The sale of turtles less than 4 inches long has been illegal in the United States since 1975.

The Center for Disease Control estimates that the ban has prevented 100-thousand salmonella-related deaths.
