Canyon, Texas - Canyon has named a new police chief.
Monday the Canyon City Manager appoints Lieutenant Dale Davis as the new Canyon police chief. Chief Davis' appointment was announced at the end of the Canyon City Commission.
Davis has been serving as interim police chief since former Chief Bobby Griffin stepped down earlier this year.
Davis has been with the Canyon police department since 1980. "You know I'm real honored that the city commission and the city manager Randy Criswell, has appointed me. I'm taking on a police department that has no problems whatsoever"
The commission also had its first public hearing on the potential annexation of a tract of land east of the city. Developers are planning retail and a housing subdivision.
City Manager Randy Criswell says, "It's kind of exciting to me to see somebody come in and propose to do something maybe on a little larger scale. They're going to phase it in, I mean, I don't think they're going to come in and construct about 250 lots at once. Their proposal would be a phased process."
The commission also accepted 250-thousand dollars of a Texas Community Development Program Grant. The rare grant is a boon for the city's development. The city plans to add 150-thousand to the grant money for a water and sewer project.
