Tri-State Fair Great American Spam Champion stops by the Early Show

Amarillo, TX -- The 2009 Tri-State Fair Great American SPAM Championship, Kids Division contest winner stopped by NewsChannel 10's Early Show.

JohnMark Avila showed us how to make his award winning SPAMzza, or spam pizza, and let us taste the finished product.

Following his Tri-State Fair victory, JohnMark's recipe now moves on to US wide judging, where it will compete against 39 other 1st place winning recipes from around the country for a $2,000 grand prize.

Here's the recipe, so you can watch his demonstration, and then make the SPAMzza for your family.


1 - 12 ounce can SPAM Bacon, diced

1 - 12 inch pizza crust

1-1/4 cup pasta sauce (Spaghetti Sauce...OPT)

6 ounces longhorn cheese, shredded

6 ounces pepper jack cheese, shredded

1/8 cup onions, diced

1/8 cup green bell pepper, diced

8 small cherry tomatoes, sliced

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Lightly spray the pizza pan with cooking spray.
  3. Place the pizza crust on the pan and start the Magic!
  4. Layer the ingredients in the following order onto the crust: pasta sauce, longhorn cheese, pepper jack cheese, Bacon SPAM, onions, bell peppers and cherry tomatoes.
  5. Place in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes. Optional: Broil for 1 to 2 minutes for extra crispiness.
