Amarillo, Texas - As of 10:30 Thursday night, a man shot by an Amarillo police officer is in stable but critical condition.

Police say officers responded to a call at 910 south browning about 8:48 Thursday night. A car was reportedly blocking another car in the driveway. Officers say a man there had a gun and was pointing it at a woman and at the officers who responded.

Sgt. Brent Barbee of the Amarillo Police Department says, "There was some sort of interchange between the officers and the man or the woman. At some point there was one shot fired by one officer when he was forced to respond to defend himself with a woman. The officer wasn't injured. The individual that was shot, the suspect, that was holding the woman in the driveway was transported to the hospital."

Police say it's unknown at this time if there was a relationship between the man and the woman. The woman and the officers who responded are not injured.  An investigation by the special crimes unit is ongoing.
