Amarillo Hockey Association looking for new home

Amarillo, Texas - The Amarillo Hockey Association won't have their lease renewed at the Sports Arena at the Tri-State Fairgrounds and must vacate by the end of this year.

The Association helps kids learn to play hockey and has three age-specific leagues that play in the Arena. That's about to change. One look at the ceiling of the sports arena will show the extent of deterioration. During a rainstorm water apparently floods the rink.

The Amarillo Hockey Association has used the Sports Arena more than six years for in-line Hockey, but they have to be out by January 1st, unable to cut a deal with the tri-state fairground management. The Association says they've asked the fairgrounds to repair the facility.

Marilyn Welborn, President of the Association says, "That wasn't an option. It's never been an option to fix it up."

Virgil Bartlett, GM of the Tri-State Fairgrounds says, "Went out  probably 3 or 4 years ago and solicited bids to fix the roof. And it was just cost prohibitive."

The management says after inspections, the facility is too far gone to put money into it.  The Association has paid $500 a month to rent the facility. They pay electricity and say they own the lights and the rink itself. They also claim that not everyone at the fairgrounds pays rent. That they've been paying rent for a building in dire need of repair for more than six years while others haven't had to pay for space

The Tri-State Fairgrounds denies the charge.

The Association is looking for a new space.
