Ban on hand-held cell phone calls in school zones

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ A new hand-held cell phone law will ban drivers from making calls in active school zones in Texas where signs are posted.

Most public schools in Texas opened Monday. The new law relating to wireless devices takes effect Sept. 1. The Texas Department of Public Safety says it will be illegal to use a cell phone in a school zone unless the vehicle is stopped or a hands-free device is used.

DPS says cities or counties wanting to enforce the law must post a sign at the beginning of each school zone to inform drivers that using a wireless  ommunications device is prohibited. Violators face a $50 fine. DPS says a driver making an emergency call in a school zone is an exception to the law.
