NM starts online registration for organ donors

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) _ New Mexicans have a new way of becoming organ and tissue donors. Gov. Bill Richardson announced on Tuesday the start of an online system for people to register to donate organs for transplant or research. Richardson was the first to use the Web site. At a news conference in the Capitol, the governor designated himself as an organ donor. Previously, people could register as a donor when they obtained or renewed their driver's license or state-issued identification card. State officials hope the online system will increase the number of organ donors. People already registered as donors can use the Web site to update their information, such as specifying any organs they do not wish to donate. The Web site is www.nmdonor.org
