Amarillo, Texas - The Young man who drowned in Lawrence Lake Friday afternoon remains unidentified.
Police say the lack of visibility in the lake made finding the body difficult. They say the man who drowned was a hispanic male in his late teens or early twenties. He had a slim build and a light mustache. He was wearing a pink shirt on top of a white Hollister brand t-shirt. He wore a coral type necklace, blue jeans and white tennis shoes. He had a wallet, but no ID.
About 6:15 Friday evening, Police Divers placed the body in a blue bag and begin taking it to shore. The second group of divers found the body.
The justice of the peace was called to pronounce the person dead and to give permission to look for identification. The original 9-1-1 call went to police about 3:20 Friday afternoon when witnesses saw something in the water.
Shana Figueroa says, "I thought I saw somebody swimming out there. Hung up the phone and went and got Jerry to make sure it was somebody and he said, yeah, and we came over here and it looked like he was struggling, and he went down a few times, came back up."
Jerry Parker says, "Oh yeah, he was swimming but he was swimming real hard, like he was pulling real hard but he wasn't moving at all. I mean, he was staying in the same place. He was held up, act like he couldn't make any ground swimming."
Police say if anyone has information on the possible identification of the drowning victim, please call the Amarillo Police Department at 378-3038.
