Senior Suicide Rate More Than Anyone Else

On average in America, for every one hundred thousand people, eleven commit suicide. But among senior citizens, that number jumps past thirty. And in white men 85 and older, it's nearly 50 --- all deaths that experts say are preventable.

Seniors have to cope with loss of mobility, struggling to pay for retirement, and feeling isolated from the community. But the number one reason experts say their suicide rate is higher... they are less likely to reach out for help.

If you are worried about an older friend or family member, there are a few signs to watch out for: such as talking a lot about death, going without eating, or even starting to give their things away.

For help contact: The Golden Phoenix in Pampa at 663-5572, 1-800-suicide, or the Pavilion in Amarillo at 337-1000.
