New Mexico AYP Results

When it comes to AYP ratings, some say there is more than what meets the eye.

Kathy Urioste was shocked when we told her that her son's Portales High School received an "F" rating.

The Portales Superintendent says he's not surprised at her reaction.

He says it's not that simple. The failing grades given to six out of the seven schools in Portales are a result of certain student sub-groups low performance.

A student with special needs, needs help with english as a second language.

If any one of those groups does not pass the test, the entire school receives an "F", regardless of the fact that other students scores exceed AYP standards.

Portales school employees say they're not giving up.They're continuously working to help the struggling sub-groups pass the test.
