Commissioners lock horns

Amarillo, Texas - Potter County Commissioner Manny Perez battled Tuesday with the Amarillo City Commission.

The Commission was considering approving and authorizing the city to issue Certificates of Obligation to pay for renovations at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport.

The contentious part of the meeting began when Perez said he didn't think people in Amarillo want the renovations. He said the changes were a waste of taxpayer dollars.

Commissioners said no city taxes are being used for construction. Federal dollars are being used.  Perez said that's still tax dollars.

Commissioner Jim Simms said he pays more in county taxes than in city taxes.

Perez involved himself in two subsequent issues and got into a heated exchange with Mayor Debra McCartt. Perez accused the Commission of working more for the west side of town than the east side. McCartt said that was insulting to the Commission.
