Pregorexia: A Disturbing New Trend

Dr. Kaye Renshaw Dr. Kaye Renshaw

Doctors are calling it a scary epidemic... More and more pregnant women are becoming dangerously obsessed with staying skinny during pregnancy. It's called pregorexia and it's just like it sounds... Being anorexic while pregnant.

Many local women are taking it to extremes, with some even losing weight as late as their third trimester. Specialists say that often happens when women cannot accept that their body is changing so rapidly.

Dr. Kaye Renshaw says, "For the patient it is terrifying to think about the number of calories you need to consume and how they are being advised about what their intake needs to be and the kinds of food they're needing to eat while they're going through the pregnancy."

When women become over obsessed with staying skinny, their babies can be born with low birth weights, growth retardation, and birth defects.

Here's how much weight doctors say you should gain during pregnancy... Normal weight women should gain between 25 and 35 pounds, overweight women should gain between 15 and 25, and obese women should gain between 11 and 20 pounds.
