Pickens says wind-power mandate should come soon

CHICAGO (AP) - Dallas oilman T. Boone Pickens believes a government mandate requiring the use of wind power could come this year.

Pickens told the American Wind Energy Association conference in Chicago today that the renewable energy standard the industry wants could come as soon as six months from now.

Pickens last year announced plans last year for a massive Texas wind farm -- then later put the project on hold because of the sagging economy.

Pickens told the wind energy group that he also believes federal regulators should have authority to make decisions about where power lines are built.

The wind power industry says the country's current grid isn't big enough to support its development. Plans for new lines often run into opposition from landowners and others.
