Men freed on basis of DNA ask Texas for help

AUSTIN, Texas - More than a dozen men who spent a total of more than 200 years in prison for crimes they did not commit are asking Texas lawmakers to improve the state's criminal justice system.

The men asked lawmakers in Austin on Tuesday to pass a series of bills to pay more compensation for people who have been wrongly convicted and to improve eyewitness testimony.

Many of the men were sent to prison after they were wrongly identified by witnesses.

The bills are getting hearings this week in the Texas Senate and House.

One of the bills would require police departments to put in writing their policies for conducting suspect lineups.

Another would boost compensation from $50,000 for each year of wrongful incarceration to $80,000.
