Texas Senate votes to OK sobriety checkpoints

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ The Texas Senate has approved legislation allowing police to set up sobriety checkpoints.

The Senate voted 20-11 Monday to approve the bill, which requires police to consider the number of drunken driving arrests and accidents in an area the previous year.

The roadblocks, limited to large counties and cities, would also have to be chosen without regard to the ethnic or economic makeup of an area. Texas is one of only 11 states that don't allow sobriety checkpoints, officials say.
