KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Although their fathers are forever linked by a famous movie, the children of actor Gary Cooper and World War I hero Alvin York have never met.
That will change Wednesday in Kansas City, when Maria Cooper Janis and Andrew Jackson York take part in a Veterans Day ceremony at the National World War I Museum at the Liberty Museum.
York was a Medal of Honor winner for his heroics in World War I. On Oct. 8, 1918, York single-handedly killed 28 German soldiers and captured 132 others in a battle in France.
Gary Cooper won a best actor Oscar for his portrayal Alvin York in the 1941 movie "Sergeant York," which is widely considered an American classic film.
During Wednesday's ceremony, Maria Cooper Janis will formally loan her father's Oscar for the role for display in the museum, which has had the Oscar on display since Sept. 1.
