Citizenship project by Dallas Catholic Charities

Associated Press - November 6, 2009 4:15 AM ET

DALLAS (AP) - Catholic Charities of Dallas is trying to help immigrants who have traditionally faced barriers in becoming U.S. citizens.

It's kicking off the North Texas Citizenship Assistance Project on Saturday at the Immigration and Legal Services office.

The project will focus on helping naturalize legal permanent residents who are 65 and older, refugees and asylees, victims of crime and domestic violence and green card holders with physical or mental disabilities.

The group is using a $100,000 federal grant.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said the money goes to help green card holders improve their English skills, learn about U.S. history and government, and prepare for the naturalization process.

Immigration officials across the nation are looking to boost the number of people applying for citizenship.
