Getting criminals off the streets. There's a new tool out there to help you do just that... A website called postacrime.com.

NewsChannel 10's Marissa Bagg explains how you use it and how it works. So many petty theft crimes like car break-ins happen far too often and are seldom solved. But the creators of postacrime.com are hoping with your help, we'll crack those cases.

Take Carrie Mashburn for example. Her car was broken into in Houston, items were stolen, but they never caught the crook. She thinks post-a-crime could change that.

"I think it's fabulous, I think lots of people feel like there's not enough police to help do that, so it's good to know there are extra opportunities to take care of that," says Mashburn.

All you do is post a crime, any robbery, burglary, or theft and include all the information about it, even videos and pictures. Anyone in your area can log on, read about it and offer up information to solve it - because often suspects elude police.

"The problem was even if the people had a great shot of the person's face, the police would have a hard time identifying them, so we thought let's harness the power of the internet and allow people to post crime that have happened to them on the internet for the public to help identify," says Ben Sharpe, who created the website.

Cash rewards and gift cards are up for grabs as incentives. But some locals already plan to do their part.

"Definitely, definitely," says Mashburn.

"In the post 9/11 era we have to be more aware of whats going on in our communities and it's the publics job to do that," says Sharpe.

The website is only one week old, and close to 100 crimes have already been posted.
