KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Carlos Santana hit a two-run homer as the Cleveland Indians topped the Kansas City Royals 6-1 Friday night. The loss cut the Royals' lead to a half-game over Detroit in the AL Central. Jason Vargas (10-7) gave up 10 hits and four runs in six innings. In his past two starts, both losses, he has allowed 21 hits in 12 innings.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jorge Soler hit two homers and fellow rookie Javier Baez had a tiebreaking, two-run double in the eighth inning off All-Star reliever Pat Neshek as the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-2 on Friday night. The Cardinals lost in the return of star catcher Yadier Molina. He had been out since July 9 because of a torn ligament in his right thumb, and went 0 for 3 and was hit by a pitch.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Royals have designated left-hander Bruce Chen for assignment after six seasons with the team. The 37-year-old Chen is 2-4 with a 7.45 ERA in 13 games this season. He was in the Royals' rotation when the season began, but went on the 60-day disabled list with a back injury.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Braylon Webb has made 30 starts for Missouri, the most by any current Southeastern Conference safety. He still expects to have the "jitters" in the Tigers' opener against an overmatched Football Championship Subdivision opponent. The 24th-ranked Tigers host South Dakota State on Saturday. The Jackrabbits play in the Missouri Valley Football Conference and are 0-6 against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents since moving to Division I in 2004.
