SAN DIEGO (AP) - All-Star Tyson Ross and the San Diego Padres topped the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 last night. Ross won his third straight start by holding the Cardinals to one run and four hits in six innings. Kolten Wong drove in St. Louis' only run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kyle Gibson pitched seven strong innings last night to lead the Minnesota Twins past the Kansas City Royals 2-1. Gibson only allowed two hits and struck out seven to improve his record to 9-8 on the season. Eric Hosmer hit an RBI single for the Royals in the bottom of the ninth.
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) - Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson still believes his best days are ahead. The 31-year-old Johnson is beginning his 10th season and is closing in on the franchise record for tackles. Johnson says he's still working out in the offseason with running back Jamaal Charles, and as long as he can keep up with him, he's going to continue playing.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) - Missouri State has been picked to finish seventh in the Missouri Valley Football Conference standings. The preseason poll of league coaches, media and sports information directors was released yesterday. Three-time defending national champion North Dakota State was picked to win the conference title.
