DALLAS (AP) - Public health officials have confirmed the first human case of the chikungunya (chicken-GUN'-yuh) virus in Dallas. Dallas County Health and Human Services today confirmed the first case in the city. The person was infected with the virus during a recent trip to the Dominican Republic.
EL PASO, Texas (AP) - FBI agents in West Texas and New Mexico have raided the offices of a former college and the house of its owners as part of an investigation that includes the U.S. Department of Education. FBI spokesman Michael Martinez said three search warrants were served Wednesday and no arrests have been made. He declined to elaborate. One campus of Anamarc College and the owners' house are in El Paso. Another campus is in Santa Teresa, New Mexico.
MCALLEN, Texas (AP) - An arrest warrant has been issued for a South Texas man in the kidnapping of his former employer's wife. Police said said Tuesday that the 30-year-old Weslaco man is accused of kidnapping the 58-year-old woman from her home south of Donna on Monday. The Monitor in McAllen reports the woman, who suffered minor injuries, was able to escape.
EDINBURG, Texas (AP) - A groundbreaking event has been held for a medical education building that will house classrooms and lab space for students at the new University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The ceremony was held yesterday for the building on the campus of the University of Texas-Pan American. Construction on the site began July 1st.
