Amarillo, TX - Amarillo police responded to 34th and Soncy late last night after a women reported she had a gun pulled on her.

"All I know is that a women was able to get away and gave a basic description of a white pickup truck," Potter County Sheriff Brian Thomas said.

Moments later, there was a reported shooting at Love's Travel Stop near Bushland on Arnot Road.

"As officers were on their way out here we received the same description of the white extended pick up at Love's Truck Stop," Sheriff Thomas said.

Witnesses say they saw a man approach an older women later identified as, Sharrel Blankenbaker, 63, and attempt to take one of her grandchildren. Officials say a 12-year-old girl made the phone call from Love's and said a man tried to grab her and he had a gun. The young girl told police she pushed him away and her grandmother told him to get away from her and let her go. Officials say the grandmother stepped in front of her 3 grandchildren and told the suspect to leave them alone, the man then shot her and left the scene.

"We saw an older woman leave with her grandchildren, and when she did a man approached them and tried to take one of the kids and he reached around a shot her in the back," Witness Angel Quezada said, "She was screaming, she was screaming for something we just couldn't tell what she was saying."

Other witnesses told NewsChannel 10 that the grandmother had just picked up her grandchildren from the airport when they stopped at Love's Travel Stop.

Blankenbaker of Oklahoma was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Officers say as they were going to Love's Travel Stop there was a reported 911 call from Indian Hills Road of an abduction of an 11 year old girl.

"They were just walking down the street when he drove by and took one of them," Sheriff Thomas said.

Minutes after the call was made, officials say a deputy identified and followed a white pick up and called for back up. When backup arrived they attempted to pull the man over and the young girl then tried to escape.

"She was able to get out of the vehicle we don't know how," Sheriff Thomas said, "She had some scrapes on her but she is fine now."

According to officials, deputies were able to stop the vehicle and shots were fired. A deputy shot and killed the suspect.

"All I can tell you is that my deputy did fire shots and the suspect is deceased," Sheriff Thomas said.

The suspect has been identified as Gary Don Carner of Amarillo. Sheriff Thomas says they do not know at this time whether the man knew the victims.

The Deputy who shot Gary Don Carner was placed on administrative leave.
