WEST TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY, TX (KFDA) - With just 183 days until the first game of the 2019 season, West Texas A&M University’s Buffalo Stadium is 60 percent complete.
Located east of the current soccer and track stadium, the new Buffalo Stadium is on campus and walking distance for students.
“So, for students that don’t have a vehicle or means of transportation, instead of driving half a mile down the road, you just walk the street and you are there,” said Roberto Roque, the student activities consultant at WTAMU. “And, it gets the students more engaged because when you see something right in front of you, like you see it right there, you want to go towards it.”
However, community members are concerned about parking availability for the stadium.
“Everybody is concerned about parking, but I think that we are going to be fine with that,” said Randy Rikel, the vice president for Business and Finance at WTAMU. “It is not going to be too bad of a walk, as you might have somewhere else if you were to go to a game. And you will not have to climb to get to the stadium, so we are excited about that.”
With 8,500 seats to fill, WTAMU is making accommodations for fans.
“We are working on getting tailgating down through 26th Street, which will be coming from the library down to Jarrett Hall on Russell Long Boulevard,” said Rikel.
The stadium's west side multi-story building will include suites and club seating. Restrooms and concession stands will be located in each of the four corners of the stadium.
The first game will be on Sept. 7, 2019.
