VIDEO: Amarillo Police Department alerting residents of scammer impersonating officer

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - The Amarillo Police Department is alerting residents about a scam where the caller impersonates a police officer.

Police say residents have been receiving calls where the caller claims to be an Amarillo police detective named Detective McCoy. Police say the scammer usually calls on a Thursday and Friday before or on paydays.

The Amarillo Police Department does not have an officer with that name, and officers will not call and threaten residents over the phone.

Police want to remind residents not to commit to any kind of payment or give any personal information over the phone without verifying first.

If you have been a victim of a scam or think something is a scam, call the Amarillo Police Department at (806) 378-4257.
